In my opinion, it really depends on what your goals are.
If you’re looking to lose weight, then there aren’t necessarily very many reasons to use MCT oil. It’s not that it’s bad, but it likely won’t give you too many benefits (although there are a few exceptions).
The good thing about MCT oil is that it gives you quicker energy, because the medium-chain triglycerides are easier and quicker to metabolize and use as energy. This is one of the big reasons why it’s common to use MCT oil in coffee or tea in the morning. It will give you a boost of energy and often some added mental clarity.
Because it’s quick to metabolize, it can often give you a spike in ketone levels. If you’re using a keto diet for therapeutic reasons, that can be very helpful.
If you’re going to use MCT oil, try to get one that is only C8. (There are 4 “kinds” of fat that are classified as MCT. C6 will irritate your stomach. C12 is fine – and very good for you – but won’t give you all the effects of MCT oil that you’re probably looking for. C10 is similar, but is also fine. C8 is the best.)
I use Bulletproof’s XCT oil regularly in my coffee. I should be getting some C8 oil later this week from KetoSource. I plan to use that for the same application. It can also be used in salad dressings, or drizzled over just about anything when you want to add some healthy fat and push yourself more towards ketosis. Putting it on a cookie won’t make it keto! There are also some recipes out there for puddings and the like using coconut milk as a base and adding some MCT oil in as well. If you don’t like the oil, Nourish Balance Thrive makes a powder called PhatFibre. Great for taking along on trips as well!
I get severe gastro issues with the oil, even 1/2 tsp. but the MCT oil powder is no problem at all. A little pricey, but Quest seems to have a decent one and I use a scoop in place of HWC in my coffee in the morning. So 1 scoop a day isn’t too expensive.
I have used some of the bulletproof guy’s “Brain Octane” oil and I was very underwhelmed. On the bulletproof website, there are multiple references to what they have dubbed “disaster pants”. If this is a common enough occurrence to have its own nickname, that gives you an indication that it might be a problem and it was for me even though I am very acclimated to coconut oil .
My preference is for actual coconut oil straight from the coconut.
