ketosis muck
I have been living a Keto lifestyle for 5 months and have not had any success in the weight loss areana.
I keep my net carbs around 15 g protein 50-60g and fat 95-105 g.
I do IF and drink bulletproof coffee in the mornings before working out and then one a little before noon. I will measure ketosis generally.
Often I don’t measure (blood meter) that I am in nutritional ketosis and especially after dinner wont.
I really don’t know what the tweak is I need , I have worked with a couple of Drs (berg), authorities (and listened to countless podcasts, read phinney and volek, moore, sisson.) Intellectually I understand what is suppose to happen, unfortunately my body is not on board. I am beyond frustrated and would love to fit in my clothes again. I would measure .5mmol – 2.0 during the day, after dinner I wouldn’t sometimes register . My question is whether I am eating too much fat and not burning my own fat stores,or from all the abusive dieting I did over the years my metabolism needs a lot of repair. I really believe in the ketogenic lifestyle, but success is showing .
Also has anyone had success with exogenous ketones and a sluggish metabolism, or is it training the body not to make ketones by supplementing. with them
any insight is appreciated.

Has someone done a lab workup on you to include TSH . What are your sleep patterns like ? How about stress in your life ? Lot of variables possible. I am not a fan of exogenous ketones unless you have a neurological problem.

- Yes, hypo, take armoir thyroid
- yes have been working with an integrative Doc for years. Bio-identical hormones, subclinical hypothyroid- take armour thyroid. Stress could be a part, horse back riding accident (fractured 4 vertebrae) 2 years ago, new job January, father passed on in May. Addressing Adrenal fatigue presently with acupressure and supplements (Dr Berg) . meditate , and yoga. thanks for responding. BB

I love all the technical
answers on here.
Simply put, you’re not eating enough calories. 15carbs 60protein and 100 fat is 1200 calories a day if you are actually eating those numbers. Unless you’re literally sitting on the couch all day and not moving, you’re most likely not even meeting you’re minimum to sustain your daily metabolic needs. Which means your body is just storing everything it can because it realizes it needs to. Eat more, bump the fat up and you could probably even do with a some more carbs. This may sound counterintuitive but it is the truth.
Try that first before administering exogenous ketones, which they do work, but you’re going to be blasting your body while it’s in a malnourished state essentially. You will inadvertently calorie restrict on keto, adding the IF onto it may be overkill right now.

- interesting, I will try that. I have read women need a few more carbs, even though I am post menopause. thank you for doing your homework on the macros.
- I don’t think I have this response technique down, just the same, I will eat more. I have read women may need more carbs , hard to say, believe I have truly challenged my metabolism over the years, and not in a healthy way.

Hurricane42’s answer could be the solution but I would have thought even if you’re not meeting the minimum for your metabolic needs, surely your body would use the fat stores.
I was going to suggest not having the BFC while fasting because with it you wouldn’t be fasting, as the fast ends when you drink it… but as you have BFC in the morning (how many hours sleep?) before working out, how about skipping it, doing the workout and then have it at noon. The BFC before working out is fueling your workout instead of your fat stores fueling it.
Experiment time, methinks! 🙂
So bump the fat up (don’t cancel those sprints!) first or skip the pre-workout BFC.
I’m wondering how much you weigh. Would you say you have a little or a lot of excess fat?
Here’s a handy calc which should prove useful

- I had only coffee with swerve and am fasting still. I for whatever reason blood test low even though I eat < 15 net carbs and 60 grams of protein. I'm told this can happen with fat adapted folks. Baffling nonetheless. Ideas?

Might sound like a silly question but are you drinking bulletproof coffee while IF?
It could be that your metabolically damaged. Really need to know what you’re eating. Can you give an example of a typical day including exercise?

- Yes Bulletproof while IF Avocado, eggs, chicken legs, salmon, sauerkraut and fermented veg. Spinach. Working out is no longer HIIT, but resistance training, walking 4 Miles 3-4 week, workout with trainer for core 2x week, yoga.
- I may have not answered successfully. yes I am doing IF with Bulletproof coffee (brain octane and MCT powder for a little creamy taste.)
- I may not have the response technique down well. my answer is yes
- I have not been having my bulletproof fat coffee until 12pm. My scales are broken so am going on the way clothes fit. Not really much difference. I am still baffled, again if one consumes exogenous ketones does that discourage the body from using “its ketone/fat reserves. I have read that it does. Similarly I have read, if one consumes too much fat it inhibits the body from burning its stored fat, and that Basically we are burning fat circulating in blood system and not stored fat. the ketones measured are then not being discharged by the body but only the circulation we have ingested. Both these questions work on the same premise, do they not. Any guidance is helpful. Becky PS What is a fat fast

how do you incorporate the exogenous ketones into your diet. How much weight did you have to loose?

I think you might be right. I am pretty active, I have heard that some women may need more carbs.
I have also geared my workouts down a smidge, to less intense ie, no more sprints.
Excessive dieting and calorie restriction , HCG diets, are definitely a mind set I need to lay down.
thank you for doing the macros.

This was a nice presentation , it unfortunately didn’t give me any new information .
My dilemma is whether this is actually nutritional ketosis or I just have circulating ketones my body isnt making .
